Nonprofit Heat Pumps

Faith Foundation Northwest is now offering rebates to Washington nonprofits to cover the full cost (up to $75,000 per recipient) of replacing fossil fuel HVAC systems with high-efficiency electric heat pumps. Applications are open now, and close at 5 pm Pacific Time on September 30, 2026.

You asked; we listened! We’ve been working hard to expand the grant funding available to faith communities, both through our mini-grant program and external sources. Our team maintains a list of grants that we believe churches may be eligible for-- thirty and counting, categorized by purpose and filterable by state-- but sometimes we come across an opportunity that is only accessible to a group of organizations rather than a single entity. In those cases, we’ve stepped up to apply for funding that could benefit multiple faith communities.

The first time it happened was in 2024-25, when a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce allowed us to pay for heat pumps in twenty homes: eighteen parsonages, and two permanent residences at Camp Indianola and Ocean Park Camp. We leveraged the success of this program to advocate for an expansion of Washington State’s program to include not only residential spaces, but commercial buildings used by nonprofits. In the next round, the Washington State Department of Commerce did just that-- and awarded us an even bigger grant to provide heat pump rebates!

The program is funded by Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act and administered through the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Program. The Department of Commerce’s goal is twofold: take fossil fuel systems out of service, and improve conditions in the buildings where Washingtonians most affected by climate change receive services. Every dollar is aimed at removing fossil fuel infrastructure.

In 2023, the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference voted to pursue a 50% reduction in our collective carbon footprint by 2030. Now at the halfway point of this goal, the Foundation continues to support this goal by researching, applying for, and administering green energy grants and rebates. Let’s take the next step towards carbon neutrality together by using electricity to heat and cool our gathering spaces.
